BeeHive Golden Corn Syrup

An off-beat pastime of some Bee Hive enthusiasts comes in the collecting of company correspondence (letters) with "St. Lawrence Starch" letterhead appearing on the paper.

What follows are 3 samples of this company stationary, accompanied with the "translated" text.

This "End of Redemption" letter from 1967 reads:
HOCKEY PICTURE OFFER DISCONTINUED
After 34 years we are obliged to discontinue distribution of N.H.L. hockey player pictures.

It is not without some regret that we take this step, having over the years supplied millions of these pictures to hockey fans across Canada, but steadily rising costs have brought us to the point of no return. Fees for picture rights demanded by the N.H.L. clubs have gone out of all reason; clerical wages and salaries are much higher, cost of producing the pictures themselves and the envelopes has increased and, finally, postage has increased by 25%.

Decision as to whether we would continue or discontinue has been delayed through negotiations with the N.H.L. clubs but, as they seem adamant in what they ask for fees, which we just cannot afford, we conclude that there is nothing for us to do but to terminate the offer.

Thank you for your past interest and we sincerely hope you will continue to select St. Lawrence brands when you come to purchase corn starch, corn syrup, corn oil, laundry starch and baby powder.

This "Follow Up" letter from 1978 reads:
Dear Mr...Further to our discussion last week, I talked to Mr. R. Hamilton and he confirmed what I suspected, that we have no pictures remaining at all. We do not even have a list of those issued.

I am sorry to disappoint you this way. Thank you for your inquiry.

Sincerely, ST. LAWRENCE STARCH COMPANY LIMITED
