Jack Gelineau
- Born in Toronto, Ontario
in 1924. Jack was a goaltender who played 4 seasons in the NHL with the
Bruins
(1949-51) and Blackhawks (1953-54).
In 1950 he won the NHL Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. Had his most
productive season in 1950-51 with Boston, winning 22 games and leading
the NHL in games and minutes played. He spent most of his final four
professional hockey seasons playing with the Quebec Aces (QHL), but
re-appeared for 2 games with the Blackhawks in 1953-54.
Prior to playing hockey, Jack served in the Second World War and was
awarded the British Empire Medal for bravery in 1944 after he survived a
plane crash and helped rescue an injured crewman from the burning
wreckage loaded with ammunition.
Gelineau earned his business degree in 1949 while attending McGill
University and played hockey on their varsity team. He spent most of his
life living in Montreal and worked in the insurance business for awhile.
In 1997 he was inducted into the McGill University Sports Hall of Fame.
Jack died of cancer in 1998.
